On what basis? Libel for news organizations has the highest standard for winning against them. Remember the movie Absence of Malice? It is perfectly legal for a reporter to state something he or she believes to be true. Even if it later turns out to be false. So long as the information is believed to be true, or reasonable, at the time of the publication, it’s perfectly legal. That’s the basis of the whole freedom of the press thing. You might have had it covered in Civics class.

To win the lawsuit, the family would have to prove that the people reporting knew the information was false. Good luck with that. Remember Richard Jewell, the rent a cop who saw the suspicious backpack and saved lives during the Olympic Park Bombing? Well the medial listed him as the primary suspect for months, and after he was cleared, which took the FBI months, Jewell sued the news organizations that had reported on the story.
