The fact is Rome didn’t and I would argue couldn’t last as a pre-industrial slave and Mediterranean trade-based “Republic.” There are many reasons for that.

But this question of why Republican institutions collapsed around the time of Julius Caesar is very different than why the Western Roman Empire collapsed as it did some 500 years later, despite the Eastern part of the same “Christian” empire surviving for another thousand years or so at Constantinople.

Maybe setting up Eastern Empire was a huge mistake and they should have spent more time strengthening the WEST
