Whether Trump moves the USA toward a more authoritarian government remains to be seen. He has indicated he intends to.
An authoritarian government let's the leader do what he or she wants easier. Democracy is messy.

Democrats have lost those without a college education and those in jobs where they live pay check to pay check. They need to do more to attract those voters.
I think the same thing happened in 2016. They need to do something about that.
