Plus they're Europe's largest supplier of natural gas. Again all state controlled. Introducing a flat tax didn't increase Russia's tax revenue. What increased their revenue was the oil production they seized right before the price tripled. Putin can literally swim in the piles of cash he's bringing in.

I agree with you on the taxes, who doesn't want to pay less? The problem is that if we suddenly half the tax rate, we're going to see a lot of revenue disappear. Either we'd have to gut government's major spending programs (Medicare, Medicaid, the military, etc) or we'd have to issue even more debt, and trust me, more debt is the last thing we need.
