Actually it was the Romans that effectively destroyed the Western Empire, and the Ottomans that ended the Eastern Roman empire, when they conquered Byzantium. In contrast, the Brits made the largest maritime empire in history, until overshadowed by US Maritime possessions in later half 1945.
