The heavy burden of HIV in the South, especially in those states considered the “Deep South,”† † Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas is driven in part by socioeconomic factors like poverty and unemployment.

Medicaid is the largest source of coverage for people with HIV in the U.S., but nine of 16 states in the South have not expanded Medicaid.

Just how proud of the south now, poverty and unemployment is high in the South, not just due to the pandemic!!

To date, 39 states (including DC) have adopted the Medicaid expansion and 12 states have not adopted the expansion. Current status for each state is based on KFF tracking and analysis of state expansion activity.
