It would seem slavery began in Africa, as I recall my history, Portuguese explorers sailing south discovered the African nations and were offered slaves for sale. They were fine with this because it was extra money coming in from excess slaves they had captured from neighboring countries.

Where the problem began was when the Portuguese and Spanish came back and the Africans either had no more slaves to sell or at some point they just started taking their own.
