The whole point was to reverse the power Big Labor gave to American workers during the postwar years, when American capital was tied to the world's highest labor and regulatory costs. Reagan's goal was to create a global market whereby American corporations could shop the globe for the cheapest labor and resources. He wanted to give incentives to producers/suppliers.

Reagan was extremely anti-union - and globalization was the fix. For instance, the mere existence of a cheaper labor alternative in Taiwan made it harder for American factory workers in Boston to strike.

But there is a bigger point, and it goes to the logic of capitalism, which is based on getting incentives right. The theory goes that if you can promise investors higher returns, they are more likely to take risks and invest their money (which leads to job growth). Indeed, the way to ensure higher returns is by letting capital go whatever it needs to go to find the cheapest costs. That is, if you obstruct capital accumulation by tying it to high American labor costs, than you will kill the incentive of suppliers to produce.This is why Reagan initiated the era of free trade and created the blueprints for NAFTA, because he didn't want to stifle productivity by preventing capital from seeking the most profitable production costs.

On national debt, economists say a more meaningful measure than dollars is the share of the overall economy taken up by the debt. By that measure, the debt rose 36 percent under Obama (rather than doubling). That's roughly the same as what occurred under Republican President George W. Bush.

The Hispanic population has risen since Obama while the poverty rate has fallen. The Pew Research Center found that 23.5 percent of the country's 55.3 million Latinos live in poverty, compared with 24.7 percent in 2010.
