We all know that the one percent (those making around $340,000 a year) as a group pay a higher rate than any other income group. Yet the new IRS data show that even the $1 million-plus earners (the top fraction of the one percent) pays the highest rate.

It’s only when you get to somewhere between the $10 million-plus earners and the “Fortunate 400″–the 400 highest earners–that the tax rates paid start to dip. And when they dip, they still dip to levels far above the average rates paid by 90% of Americans. The Fortunate 400 paid a rate of more than 18% in the latest period.

This isn’t to argue against higher taxes on the wealthy. Nor does it deny that some rich people reduce their taxes to well below the official rates through tax avoidance schemes and capital gains.

But the average tax rate that top earners actually pay is also going up. The average tax rate for the top 1 percent will go from 27.2 percent for 2012 taxes to 31.4 percent for 2013 taxes, and 33.4 percent for 2014 taxes, according to the Tax Policy Center.

Um, yeah, but those "handouts" are mostly Social Security and Medicare, which the working class, not the rich, are paying for.

Of course, I'll bet you if the children of the Rich were fighting those wars, we wouldn't be so keen on fighting them.

I keep a copy of my Q4 2008 401K statement as a reminder of how much the 'private sector' can be trusted to "take care" of me in my old age.

That's the one where the money I seeded into it over the previous six years vanished in about six months.

You do realize that income taxes are paid on PROFIT and not on ones revenues that they take in, don't you?

INCOME means PROFIT, not what income we take in when we draw a salary....

the INCOME TAX = a PROFIT TAX

so if 47% of this country owes no taxes, this is because they did not make a profit that year for the most part....

Just as 2 companies, both having $1 million in total revenues for the year, but once all expenses are deducted, 1 company made no profit and owes ZERO in income taxes and the other company did make a profit and owes $100,000 in taxes

the definition of INCOME is PROFIT....the income tax is a tax on ones profit, if you don't make a profit you don't pay income taxes/Profit taxes, this means that the wealthiest or top 10% MADE THE MOST PROFIT, therefore they paid the most in taxes....

SIMPLE as that....

People are under the false assumption the INCOME TAX means salary or the money the family made that year and IT IS NOT....the INCOME that is TAXED is ONLY the PROFIT from all the wages and other earnings one takes in....

JUST LIKE businesses or corporations pay corporate income taxes on their PROFIT only, we as individuals are income taxed on our profit only.

So you think that money management skills are something that the vast majority of Americans are good at eh? Got any proof of that. Or are you just dreaming?

My observations as a mortgage loan officer for 18 years were that the majority of citizens sucked at managing their money. But granted, I wan't talking to millions of Americans.

I am sure your experience is much different. What do you do that makes you think our fellow citizens are good at managing money?
