Ex-Employee Leaks Details About Refugee Abuse On Nauru

According to this: A last resort? - Summary Guide: The facts about immigration detention in Australia | Australian Human Rights Commission the top three countries of origin for arrivals at Nauru Detention Centre are Fiji, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

That's awfully dated. Covers only 1999 to 2003.... And it conflicts with itself in several places. Like in the places of origin that you quoted. Elsewhere in the statement you find.

Most of the children in detention over the Inquiry period were from Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, the Palestinian Territories and Sri Lanka.

that quote applies to ALL the OFF-SHORE detention facilities, while the one you used was for Nauru specifically.
A lot has changed in the world since 2003 --- so no one in this thread actually KNOWS...

Detention powers of the Executive have also been expanded to detain asylum seekers and refugees indefinitely, powers that were found to be valid by the High Court in Al Kateb in 2007. Most egregiously, those with ASIO adverse security assessments are detained indefinitely, many, including children, for some years without meaningful access to legal advice or independent review. About 2026, people, including 138 children, remain in closed detention in Australia and 943 males remain on Manus and 448 refugees on Nauru, including 81 children. Most have been held for well over a year in conditions that have been criticised by the UN as breaching the Torture Convention.

You can read a bunch of things into this. But it might not be true. If the author is stating that these folks are in continuing detainment because of "adverse security assessments" --- then we have an answer. He also seems to imply that "single MEN" are predominantly housed on Manus Island while children and families are housed on Nauru. Don't know. Can't guess. But if that ASIO designation accounts for the BULK of the total 2026 people --- then we have a "vetting problem"..

Refugees have no complaint. They wanted to be refugees. This is what they get.

I agree and I don't blame Australia for their tough stance on Muslim refugees.

The Aussie Govt. has obviously been watching whats going on in Europe and don't want the same for their country.

Good for them and I couldn't give two shits for the fate of refugee's. Let all go back to whatever shithole they crawled out of.

So, you think it's just fine that children are getting abused and raped? Simply wow.

These people aren't my problem and I'm not going to make them my problem.

They should all go back to where they came from and let the Arab League take care of them.

Why should the Arab League take care of? Most aren't even Arab.

China
Afghanistan
India
Iran
Sri Lanka
Iraq
Pakistan
Indonesia
Fiji
Malaysia

The Arab League is in based in the ME seems to me they would be more than happy to help out their fellow middle easterners

Indeed, but the purpose of this thread is to snivel about western countries while avoiding how non-white non-Christian influenced countries handle 'refugee problems', and it's somehow western countries obligation to be overrun with problems created by Islamist vermin, Commies, degenerate savage cultures, etc., etc., etc., and cry all about how 'racist n stuff' it is, never mind how 'racist n stuff' the rest of the planet is and that we should do nothing but praise them for their racism while sniveling about Whitey; yeah it makes no sense but that's the narrative the OP and the subsequent fake concern for The Children' peddled to morons dumb enough to buy into the bullshit.

Either way - if it's security concerns or not - this situation should not be allowed to exist as it is, and it should be exposed to public scrutiny.

There is reason international law mandates that children not be imprisoned or detained with adults and that men and women are housed seperately. Overcrowding, insufficient resources, no known future - all of that can lead to severe problems and abuse on the most vulnerable, in this case children and women.
Imprisoned?! This is dingbat stuff. You wrote it!

Australia is not so embarrassed that they've stopped paying Nauru.

You stop paying them and likely the non-Christian natives would boil them and eat them.

Immigration laws are strange and voluminous.. Could take a year to get a reading out 10,000 pages of law and policy. And because these refugees gain certain rights just by putting a toe on Aussie land -- they can't be housed in Australia. We do the same thing. And worse. Like when Elian Gonalez's mom gets eaten by a shark trying to bring him to America -- Feds with Guns force HIM back to Cuba.

What we DON'T KNOW -- is exactly how much oversight Aussies have committed. These people are not technically in their care if they don't have passports or a native country vouching for them.

Someone needs to provide refugee aid. It really is an International problem. If the NGOs are being BLOCKED from access by either Nauru or Aussieland or both --- that needs to be fixed.

Nauru is a perm member of the UN.. Believe it or not.. Had to look it up. Now I don't think the UN is worth a warm spit on frostbite, BUT ---- that's one appropriate avenue for clearing up all our questions.

You need to see ALL of the failures creating this situation. And not just assume that it all falls into malfeasance on solely the part of Australia. They don't HAVE an Ellis Island. They have a bunch of sketchy 3rd world neighbors who claim they can do anything for money.

And Ellis Island today would be totally incapable of handling mass migration of this type anyways. WE -- the USA -- are a primary cause of busting up the power structure in those areas. We should have been ON the humanitarian crisis YEARS ago... We are more at fault than Australia.

It's that other 3% of 3000 that have the big black kettles and the poison darts.

10 points for anybody that knows the original name of Nauru..

Pleasant Island

:eek-52:

10 points? We can negotiate here, how about two lollipops instead?

Captain John Fearn was in the South Pacific in 1798 with his whaling ship Hunter, when he came across an island and as it was so picturesque he named it Pleasant Island.

The Nauruans are the most overweight people in the world. The men are 97% overweight and the women are 93% overweight, the obesity level is 71%, they have the worlds highest rate of Type 2 Diabetes, 40% of Nauruans have it.

Fat of the land: Nauru tops obesity league

Probably someone will classify that as refugee abuse if they all gain too weight eating like the natives.
How does this 8 mile sq island get a seat on the UN gen assembly and negate our ability to monitor their "refugee camps" ????

This must be monitored now, are the refugees becoming obese :eek-52:

It's absurd that Nauru gets to dictate such things, I'm not sure though if Nauru cares whats happening in these refugee camps, they get paid $10 million from the Government of Australia to keep the primarily Afghans in those camps.

In other nations that the Afghans have attempted to stay in, many have been deported back to Afghanistan, I can't see why the 800 plus Afghans in the Nauru camps can't also be deported back to Afghanistan.

And that is what makes me very uncomfortable - it's clearly being done in conjunction and for the Australian government, who is footing the bill. As a result they have a clear responsibility for these people.

Also - though I am not sure, many are not refugees per se, but migrants - I'm not sure how that effects things. It's not much different then our problems with migrants coming from Haiti, Cuba or accross the Mexican border. I'm not sure that makes it an international responsibility unless they are refugees.

From what I understand - and I'm going to look for more info - when Save the Children's contract was terminated, there is no NGO presence - NGO's, independent observers etc are blocked.

This is from 2014....but things don't seem to have changed much. Apparently they are subject to so much violence on Nauru they prefer the violence in the detention centers.

Refugees living on Nauru say they want to return to camps due to violence

Refugees on Nauru say they have pleaded with Australian immigration authorities to return them to detention centres because of violence and harassment from some members of the local population.

Some women living in camps for refugees say they sleep wearing jeans because they are afraid of being raped by local men.

The release of hundreds of refugees since May has caused turmoil in the tiny Pacific nation. Many Nauruans support the refugees and treat them with kindness. But a section of the community has declared its deep antagonism toward the new arrivals.

An Iranian who asked to remain anonymous said refugees lived under constant threat of physical and verbal abuse.

“They attack the refugees,” he said. “You are walking in the street, they say ‘fuck you, go back to your camp’. They throw rocks. They spit at you. This is normal.”

Earlier this month refugees on Nauru told Guardian Australia of physical bullying in schools and regular attacks on the streets.

Australia’s immigration department has confirmed that assaults have occurred. Refugees said violent crimes were committed with impunity and there was no point complaining to police. In some cases doing so even led to reprisals, they said.
