The earliest existing reference to Moses in Greek literature occurs in the Egyptian history of Hecataeus of Abdera (4th century BCE). He was writing about someone who lived 1,000 years before him. His and all following literary references come from oral traditions passed down generation after generation. They were enriched with other traditions, like his basket ride as a baby.
