EU warns Israel over settlement construction

TEL AVIV, Israel -- Boosted by newly discovered natural resources, Israel is surging ahead economically – a success that is pushing the issue of the country's $3 billion in annual aid from the United States onto the agenda.

The country made its first intervention in the foreign currency market in almost two years Tuesday, buying $100 million to peg back the growing strength of its shekel.

A Bloomberg survey this week said the shekel was the strongest of 31 major currencies tracked over the last six months.

Last week, Israel passed another milestone, a potential gamechanger for its economy. Gas began to flow from gas fields off the coast. By 2015 Israel is expected to be fully energy independent, and may be a net exporter.

And there’s more good news: In this water-challenged region, Israel is well on the way to water independence. Its water desalination industry supplies up to 40 percent of the country’s demand for water, and another 40 percent comes from recycled water from domestic and commercial consumption. Israel reuses its water two to three times.

The boom may give a louder voice to calls for a reduction to the $3 billion worth of financial assistance Israel receives from the U.S. each year – especially in the Washington, where budget battles continue.

UN Security Council Resolution 242 (Inserted Link: vr/R)
(OBSERVATION)

Security Council Resolution S/RES/242 22 November 1967 (AKA: "land for peace" resolution) said:
The Security Council,

Expressing its continuing concern with the grave situation in the Middle East,

Emphasizing the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war and the need to work for a just and lasting peace in which every State in the area can live in security,

Emphasizing further that all Member States in their acceptance of the Charter of the United Nations have undertaken a commitment to act in accordance with Article 2 of the Charter,

1. Affirms that the fulfilment of Charter principles requires the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East which should include the application of both the following principles:

(i) Withdrawal of Israel armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;

(ii) Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force;

2. Affirms further the necessity

(a) For guaranteeing freedom of navigation through international waterways in the area;

(b) For achieving a just settlement of the refugee problem;

(c) For guaranteeing the territorial inviolability and political independence of every State in the area, through measures including the establishment of demilitarized zones;

3. Requests the Secretary-General to designate a Special Representative to proceed to the Middle East to establish and maintain contacts with the States concerned in order to promote agreement and assist efforts to achieve a peaceful and accepted settlement in accordance with the provisions and principles in this resolution;

4. Requests the Secretary-General to report to the Security Council on the progress of the efforts of the Special Representative as soon as possible.

Special Emphasis:

(i) Withdrawal of Israel armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;

(ii) Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force;

(COMMENT)

This is a simultaneous requirement.

  • Israel has to withdraw to the Armistice Line.

  • The Palestinians had to:
    • Termination of all claims or states of belligerency
    • Respect for and acknowledgment of the sovereignty
    • Respect territorial integrity and political independence of every State
    • Respect their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force

Neither side did what they were suppose to do. There is more than just one wrong here.

  • The Palestinians:
    • Never termination of all claims or states of belligerency.
    • Never respected or acknowledge Israeli sovereignty until the 1993 Oslo accord.
    • Never respect territorial integrity and political independence of the State of Israel.
    • Never respect their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force --- and conducted many terrorist actions between 1967 and 1993.

But the requirements UNSC/RES/242 was ignored by more than just the Israeli. And the hostile actions taken on the part of the Hostile Arab Palestinian warranted sequester and quarantine of the Palestinian.

Yep, that figure came direct from Iran Press TV, same ones that first said Israel had opened a dam and intentionally flooded gaza, during the storm of the century. All the best stories come from there.
The best story was spun by Lord Rothschild:

Any article coming from a website whose tagline reads... "Wake Up, America, Your Government is Hijacked by Zionism" gets automatically tossed into the garbage can...

It could be saying that water is wet, and I'd still ignore it, and toss it in the garbage...

Friggin' bottom-feeders...

And it goes without saying that anyone who'd use such a blatantly biased source is not really seeking actual discussion or any solution to problems: they just seek to pimp their view. Which is a pretty disgusting view, dependin as it does upon the same colossal strawman of 'international Jewry' as did Henry Ford's filth, and the 'Protocols' before that.

Nazi or Commie, or freakin' "pacifist humanitarian" - it's all the same swill shoveled from the same shitstains......... The stench is overwhelming.

We will built and built and the EU can just **** ***
Keep up the good work.
Soon your racist state will be FLUSHED into the same sewer as White South Africa:

"An internal report by the European Union has come down hard on Israel’s decision to continue settlement construction in occupied East Jerusalem, threatening to end economic projects that involve the Jewish settlements.

"The harshly worded 15-page report provides recommendations to the 27 member-states for responding to Israel’s activities in the occupied territories – which the document described as 'systematic, deliberate and provocative' – and endorses a strategy that aims at 'making it impossible for Jerusalem to become the capital of two states.'

"Seven of the report’s 10 recommendations propose slapping tough economic sanctions on organizations directly involved in construction projects in the Jewish settlements, Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

"The report also called on the EU’s 27 member-states to 'prevent, discourage and raise awareness' about doing business with companies that work in the disputed settlement zones."

EU report slams Israeli settlements, calls for economic sanctions ? RT News

Ah, now the 'True Believer' commie is quoting from RT.....which is as close to Emperor Pukin's blog as one can get.

Such a reliable source of information, so dedicated to the continuation of the American republic - just like the poster who's quoting it.

Georgie figures his ship will come in 'come the revolution'......it's a version of the 'pie-in-the-sky' that the religion commissars used to tell the serfs back in the day. Only Marx 'updated' it, for the 19th C.

It's touching to see the faith he has in his 'religion', isn't it? What's most amusing about Marx's 'updates' is that - like Luther and others before him - he regurgitated previous 'blood libels'.

georgephillip, et al,

Your definition of CI is very narrow (in some circles wrong) and your conclusion is wrong.

Is this an official government site, Mr. Geroge? I don't think so. I think I will take the word of a former poster, a retired Naval Intelligence Officer, who said that if Americans knew just how much the Israelis were helping us, Americans wouldn't begrudge them one penny. I find it verry pathetic, Mr. George, that while innocent people are being murdered all over the Middle East, you only concentrate on Israel and the Jews. Perhaps these people who have died were not human beings in your mind.
"The CIA considers Israel its No. 1 counterintelligence threat in the agency's Near East Division, the group that oversees spying across the Middle East, according to current and former officials.

"Counterintelligence is the art of protecting national secrets from spies. This means the CIA believes that U.S. national secrets are safer from other Middle Eastern governments than from Israel."

US sees Israel, tight Mideast ally, as spy threat

Does Hossie's "retired Naval intelligence officer" have a name?
(COMMENT)

The protecting national secrets from spies (counterespionage) is only one fine aspect.

CI is defined by Congress as:

50 USC 401a said:
(3) The term “counterintelligence” means information gathered, and activities conducted, to protect against espionage, other intelligence activities, sabotage, or assassinations conducted by or on behalf of foreign governments or elements thereof, foreign organizations, or foreign persons, or international terrorist activities.

SOURCE: Title 50 › Chapter 15 › § 401a

This means the CIA believes that U.S. national secrets are safer from other Middle Eastern governments than from Israel."
(COMMENT)

This is an unfounded statement.

ALL nations (including Middle Eastern governments), foreign organizations, or foreign persons, or international terrorist activities pose a "potential" threat. The scope, degree, magnitude and nature of the threat vary from one threat to the next.

Most Respectfully,
R
Rocco...where were you on June 8, 1067?

"On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and lied about it. Survivors have been forbidden for 40 years to tell their story under oath to the American public. The USS Liberty Memorial web site tells their story and is dedicated to the memory of the 34 brave men who died."

Does Israel's deliberate assault on Liberty (as attested to by all survivors of the assault) qualify as the actions of an ally? If not, perhaps that helps explain why many unbiased US intelligence officials worry more about Israeli espionage than Persian perfidy, for example.

The Jewish state was conceived as a little, loyal Jewish Ulster in the heart of Arab oil by the City of London nearly a century ago. After WWII Wall Street took over the task of supporting the colonization of Palestine by European migrants at the expense of an indigenous majority, and that's where the legitimate beef began and ends; with Jews accepting the reality their nation is just not that special.

pbel, georgephillip, et al,

Yes, if it were an "illegal occupation."

Seems to me that your very biased conclusion is wrong...No peace deal has been signed...Resistance to an illegal Occupation is legal under International Law.
(COMMENT)

Be specific, what makes the "occupation" illegal?

The issue has been addressed as an item called PERMANENT STATUS NEGOTIATIONS (Oslo I) with the CHAPTER 2 - REDEPLOYMENT AND SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS in accordance with Oslo II.

I was pretty sure that Isreal and the PLO agreed that the outcome of the Jerusalem, refugees, settlements, security arrangements, and borders would be based of further negotiations under the "Permanent Status Negotiations clause."

(FURTHER)

Seems to me that your very biased conclusion is wrong...No peace deal has been signed...Resistance to an illegal Occupation is legal under International Law. Has nothing to do with the potential espionage threat from Israel.

I may be biased. It is hard not to be in today's political climate.

The response on the nature of CI was directed at: georgephillip You are correct, it has little to do with the Occupation.

I can say with great confidence that there is no ally of any consequence and capability, that does not pose a threat to sensitive US Operations, where ever they may be conducted overseas. This includes Israel, but is not limited to Israel. The internal security forces of every nation in the Middle East (and elsewhere) are formidable. And I can say, with great confidence, that nearly every nation, of any capability, interest, or of some consequence, believes that the US conducts either overt, covert, or clandestine collection operations against them; whether or not that is in truth the case. Everybody watches everybody else; friend or foe.

Resolution 242

United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 (S/RES/242) was adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council on November 22, 1967, in the aftermath of the Six-Day War. It was adopted under Chapter VI of the UN Charter.[1] The resolution was sponsored by British ambassador Lord Caradon and was one of five drafts under consideration.[2]

The preamble[3] refers to the "inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war and the need to work for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East in which every State in the area can live in security."

The Arab position:
The Khartoum Resolution of September 1, 1967 was issued at the conclusion of 1967 Arab League summit convened in the wake of the Six-Day War, in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan... It is famous for containing (in the third paragraph) what became known as the "Three No's": "no peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, no negotiations with it."

Israel does not vote in our congressional elections and even if all American Jews voted as one - an absurd assumption - they would account for less than 3% of any election. So who is voting for these pols who support Israel?
