CA gov. candidate Eric Swalwell rents a room in a family of three’s home to claim he lives in California: report
Swalwell rents a room—not an apartment or home— in a small town near Bay Area. The home is occupied by a family of three.
California Republican gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell reportedly rents a single room in a home occupied by a family of three near Fresno — and one of his Democratic opponents says it's just so the congressman can claim he lives in the Golden state.
The discovery came from Swalwell's top Democratic opponent, billionaire Tom Steyer. Steyer says Swalwell appears to "live in California on paper only" as the governor race heats up, "making him unlikely to meet the basic residency requirements to run for Governor."
In a letter from Ryan Hughes, Steyer's attorney, he called on the Secretary of State Shirley Weber to "enforce a dormant residency requirement in the governor's race" and encouraged Weber to "allow for robust legal proceedings as to whether Swalwell is eligible to serve as Governor," preventing any future action by the Trump administration.
It's heating up in the race for California governor. As is always happens this has gone from "right wing conspiracy talking point" to well...... reality and a legitimate concern now that it is being brought up by Tom Steyer who is running for California Governor as a Democrat.
There's all the usual counterpoints but really, at the end of the day this is about much more than if the letter of the law is being followed.
He's not a real Californian at this stage. His family, home and entire life is in Washington DC. He does the absolute minimum he believes he can get away with and still try to claim some sort of California residency.
At a minimum the argument becomes that Erik Swalwell can't afford to live in California but wants to be the governor of the state he helped fail. I'm not sure that's a winning position.
At what point are Democrats going to hold their own candidates to some sort of standards? The should at least have their families, lives and actual legitimate residency in the place they want to represent.
