The Grassley-Cruz Bill passed the Senate in 2013 on a 52-48 vote (when Democrats controlled the Senate). It was filibustered by the Democrats to protect felons and allow them continued access to guns

It was filibustered because it did nothing to stop the straw purchases in Texas where thousands of weapons each year change hands in the parking lots of Walmart, Denny's and other parking lots. What good does it to have a Grassley-Cruz bill when there is a huge workaround where anyone can buy firearms regardless of any stupid database even without proper ID.

Cruz is a murderer.

I hate Cruz but he didn’t kill anyone…

Blame the monster and not each other…

STFU Cruz. Your 2013 bill didn't stop the straw purchases in Texas at all. It didn't do Universal Background Checks. Today, in Texas, a 16 year old that looks older can buy an AR in a friggin parking lot without having to show any ID of any kind with no background check. That is why it was voted down in 2013. Last year, it was reintroduced under a different name with everything Cruz wanted but it included stopping straw purchases and required Universal Background Checks. Only 6 Republicans in the House voted for it and in the Senate, all Republicans voted against it and one Dem Senator voted against it. It failed.

The Texas School Shooter could have purchased his gun on any street corner in Texas and pranced around with it in full view.

It's not up to the Feds to protect the schools, it's up to the State and Community. Colorado used to be the goto state for school shootings (we had 3) until we tightened up our schools with an armed guard at the front gate, cameras, safe rooms and only one way in. Even if you shoot the guard, you can't get in. He has to trigger the outer gate. And when you enter the outer gate, you pass through a metal detector. You stay in that outer room until the guard is satisfied you are not a threat. If you do become a threat, you may find yourself trapped in that outer room. And no, out teachers are not armed. They are authorized but have elected to not be armed. Even if you do get into the hallways, you will find yourself not able to enter the classrooms because the metal doors are locked and the students will have moved to a safe room. Obviously, Texas has not done this. They need to do it. It actually doesn't cost that much. The money spent on one shooting pays for all the schools hardening up.
