The Marine Corps said Sunday that it has called off the search for seven Marines and one sailor three days after an accident off the coast of southern California.

Back in the early 60's when Marines used to train off Vieques Is., I was part of a Marine unit that made a practice night landing off an LST (The Desoto County) in one of the old amtrac tanks. The driver remembered me from Boot Camp and warned me not to sit under the hatch. Sure enough when we rumbled off the tank deck into the ocean a shower of sea water came through the leaky hatch. I preferred climbing down the nets onto the open landing craft.
