Education Secretary Linda McMahon announces mass layoffs at Dept. of Education - 50% of workforce

No there isn't. There are provisions for the Army and the Navy. An Air or Space for isn't mentioned.

Unless you want to "interpret" common defense, just like provide for the general welfare is interpreted.

I'm all for reducing government, there is a way to do that through the legislative process.

This is not the way.

You expect the Federal Government to down size itself, seriously ?
Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Trump is part of the Federal Government. Come to think it, so it Musk now.

Yes and Trump will be gone in 4 years. The idea of DOGE is a good one. The Federal Government needs to be drastically reduced any of these departments or services can be passed to the States if the people want them. That was the original intent of the Founding Fathers and the Constitution. What we have now is an abomination.

Which I'm fine with. It's not the reduction's I'm objecting to. It the chainsaw mentality and throwing chaos bombs that the Trump/Musk administration is using that is causing this to be seen as a fuster cluck.

That means as soon as the Mid-Terms the GOP will lose Congress and possibly the White House in 2028, not because the ideas are bad. But because the ideas are implemented to HURT people. All for "sticking it to the libs".

The reductions should be done in an adult manner, not as a child throwing a temper tantrum.

So make the cuts? Fine, that money can be used to pay down the debt and States can fund their own programs.

Most of those people vote Democrat anyway. No great loss.

The results speak for themselves.

Complete failure.

I was talking about those specific programs in the post I quoted. Your reply is irrelevant.

Judge Tanya Chutkan needs some documentation first before President Musk can do another thing. If he fails to comply before the deadline that might be the end of DOGE.

The directives from U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan come as 14 Democratic state attorneys general are suing President Donald Trump, Musk and DOGE, arguing that Musk is unconstitutionally wielding power, according to Politico. Chutkan gave Musk and DOGE three weeks to produce the information, which ultimately will help her decide whether to block DOGE’s operations altogether, it added.

Federal judge orders Elon Musk, DOGE to reveal plans to downsize government, identify all employees

Yea……Dept of Education is just paper pushers

Paper for Student Loans and Grants
Paper to fund Special Education
Paper to provide additional funding for low income districts

Thank you for confirming that. 4,000 paper pushers undoubtedly making much more than actual teachers.

you love this, eh?

It's your party's final demise

As someone that works in a School Districts Human Resources Department (I'm the residence HR Information Systems Geek), I've watched teacher recruitment now for decades. I've got a BS in technology and a MEd. After the Navy I was going to be a Middle School Tech Ed. teacher - but private industry snagged me first. But that's a different story.

IMHO - we are in a teacher staffing criss and have been for a number of years. Pre COVID we were hitting 100% or very close to it fully qualified/licensed staffing levels, including hard to staff Math and SPED. Now we are having to hire unlicensed teachers (mostly those already with Bachelor degrees) into special programs where they work now and have course requirements to be completed in 2-3 years to complete license requirements.

And the suprising thing is, it's not so much the pay that has caused the long term problems. It's the disparaging of teaching as a profession that has caused the long term staffing issues. People just don't want to go into teaching like they used to as a career field. Pay may be "a" factor, but I think it relates more to teachers/administrators not being able to effectivley deal with disipline issues (which leads to disruption in the classroom) and demonization of the profession in the media for decades.

WW

All of this. Every word. It used to be worth it, even for the low pay. Now, on top of low pay, we have horrid discipline issues and an unsupportive public.

I work in a very good district and NEVER--I mean NEVER--saw teachers walk away mid-year. Now? Happens all the time.

Some in the GOP want the department eliminated entirely. Methinks these mass layoffs is the best they'll ever get.

In an ideal world maybe. When the House is so eaten up by rot from within that the floors are buckling it is hard to paint over and little scratches with a scraper won't work anymore. Even the tenants will notice what needs to be done eventually, and it will not be done without some noise and dust.

Of course
They serve a vital function to education
Many schools struggle to fund Special Education and would drop it if they didn’t receive federal funding
Would you just throw these students away?

If the ED is eliminated and Federal assistance funding for students with disabilities goes away...

That does not mean education requirements for students with disabilities goes away under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). Local school systems will still be responsibile for educating students with disabilities, but the dime will be totally on their shoulders.

And if they try not to? The parents will sue for non-compliance with the law forcing school systems not to discriminate and it will cost the school systems in both litigation and damage awards.
