On a side note, I admired MLK and while I don't agree he "saved the country" - gross hyperbole - he certainly had a huge and positive impact on this country at a time when it was sorely needed.

However, the incredible irony is that the current Democrat Party has taken King's "I have a dream" speech, wadded it up and shoved it down the toilet.
"The content of one's character" is NOT the standard anymore. It is literally "the color of their skin" instead.
We've gone backwards, thanks to the racist, Marxist Left.

So we honor his memory by not working,not going to school etc.

I don't recall a "self-sufficiency" message from MLK. All I recall is pie-in-sky hopefulness, with no basis of hope.

i think it's fair to say there was a lot of unrest.

but i guess people who think the civil rights act somehow infringes on our rights really aren't the proper judges of that.

The Civil Rights laws opened doors of opportunity that blacks have yet to walk through. Black economic salvation will only come through black capital formation and investment. Societal salvation isn't going to happen without this.

I think MLK would not only have been appalled to see how blacks have gone backwards, despite the advantages of AA and DEI, but to the riots that immediately ensued following his assassination. This was not the “character” of which he spoke.

The DC riots, in which blacks destroyed big segments of the city, happened when I was in junior high school. Ten years later, when I was a recent college graduate, the burned out buildings and other signs of the destruction were still visible.

Americans should also consider how prescient King was when commenting on US values 60 years ago.

From his 1967 "Beyond Vietnam" speech:
