DOW Futures Tumble 900 Points On Fear Of Trumps Tariffs Will Spark Trade War

Not my job to educate you, it took a lot of time on my behalf
to catch up with how the market reacts, and I didn't learn it on
a messageboard.
Again, did the tariffs enacted under Smoot-Hawley work.

I’m not asking what the law was, it if you think it produced any positive result.

This coming from the side that pushes for more taxes on stock investments…. To the point radicals want to tax 401(k)
Your 401(k) is taxed when you withdraw your money.

You should get one.

Right, the working class in other countries hahaha

I feel bad for those stock portfolios. Poor things. Wall St doesn't make enough money.
Hilarious

Who pays tariffs fuckup

Today President Trump displayed a VERY clear chart of how much MORE the current tarriffs foreign countries are charging us. So cry me a river, this is nothing more than leveling the playing field.
Trump lies. Every time he opens his mouth.

And he's an idiot. He can't even read a balance sheet, much less understand how tariffs really work.

U.S. stock futures cratered as President Donald Trump unveiled sweeping tariffs of at least 10% and even higher for some countries, raising the risks of a global trade war that hits the already sputtering U.S. economy.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 918 points, or 2.2%. S&P 500 futures dropped 3.2%. Nasdaq-100 futures lost 4.1%.

Largest tax hike on the working class in history.
Oh my God
The only option is to key more Tesla's and release gray haired Boomer cat ladies crying on social media

The Great Depression was caused by the Federal Reserve. And kept that way until WW 2. If you are complaining about Trump, then why did Kamala lose? You guys did so good.

Did you guys see that silly chart?

Heard and McDonald islands are uninhabited.

He tariffed them anyway.

SMDH

That the Smoot-Hawley Tariff caused the Depression of the 1930s is a New Deal myth in which America’s schoolchildren have been indoctrinated for decades.

The Depression began with the crash of the stock market in 1929, nine months before Smoot-Hawley became law. The real villain: The Federal Reserve, which failed to replenish that third of the money supply that had been wiped out by thousands of bank failures.

Milton Friedman taught us that.

Nothing like a game of chicken right? Let's see who wields the biggest guns.
I do imagine there will be negotiations with a lot of those countries.
Canada felt emboldened a few weeks ago....until they weren't.

There will be retaliatory tariffs. In fact the fact that he's slapping tariffs on pretty much everyone gives countries every incentive to act in concert in slapping retaliatory tariffs. They know they won't be acting all by themselves; they'll have company. They can apply a lot more leverage if they act with others, as I am sure they will.

I do agree with you (at least I think) that the smart play for a country like Canada would be to take advantage of Trump's mistake and work with Mexico to find a face-saving way out. Like closing some of the manufacturing loopholes for countries like China (or any other major exporter that uses Canada or Mexico to assemble heavy manufacturing.

And if I'm Trump I'm working with Canada, Mexico, and the EU to coordinate against China, though I don't know if that's even possible now b/c he's so badly pissed everyone off that it's hard to trust him.

Yes, the US holds a lot of cards, but part of the reason we hold the cards is because of the system we've created, being the world's banker and being the world's consumer. I think we can agree the system needs changing, but it needs to change strategically. Doing tariffs this way (not to mention foreign policy this way) is taking the cards we have and throwing them across the floor.

Not sure that it's even relevant today or not. A lot has changed along with the economies.
The Trump tariffs are kind of like a bargaining chip for negotiations from what I understand.
It's why it isn't dollar for dollar, Trumps looks like 50% of what the countries are charging us.
He does want industries to come to the US to avoid the tariffs, and there are companies that are already
in the process to do that.

Agree.

Uh, no. It was a speculative real estate/asset bubble popped. Just like in SE Asia in 1997. Just like the Financial Crisis in 2008. Just expanding money supply wouldn't have done shit, in part because the banks would have not lent it in return. There was no consumption because markets were severely over-leveraged, with lots of outstanding debt. There still would have been a credit/lending freeze.

FDR stabilized banks with a radio address. He also had a plan that involved a lot more than just printing money.

Milton Friedman taught us that.

lol

Sure.

As expected....the market doesn't like the unknown. When the dust settles it could very well
go in the opposite direction of todays futures. :dunno:
