By apologizing when they did nothing wrong.

They apologized because it was it was screwy. They wouldn't apologize for no reason.

They apologized because it was the path of least resistance. They did not want to get in a social media war with people that would simply repeat the false narrative they created to explain the advertisement. What is ironic is that using a diverse group of women in their advertisement is part of what became an issue. If Dove used only white women there would be people crying racism over that.

That isn't what the apology says.

Company regretted it.

They regretted it because they forgot what dishonest liars some people are.
