Its called "due process", if a Doctor or psychiatrist tells the judge that a patient should not have access to guns, and presents the medical justification, that should suffice. The judge could even request a 2nd opinion, but time would be extended, and who pays?

Again, often we see police fail at protecting rights on a daily basis. Believe me when I say I back police, they have a very difficult job. But, when it comes to upholding our rights, not so much.

Its our lawyers and the judges that protect our rights. Police have other responsibilities, based on "reasonable suspicion"

I'm an NRA member, so would I support any law that affects "the right to bear arms?". NO

However, public safety requires some regulation of firearms. State Red Flag laws appear to be legal constitutionally.
Due process could be that a judge reviews the "red flag" and decides if that person is psychologically capable to own guns. If not, the FBI and local police should be notified. A very small cohort of citizens would not be allowed to have guns, yet mass shootings should be prevented/reduced. Many mass shooters were simple to predict if red flag laws were available.
