Does this look like Iceland to this forum?

Sounds like you think this is Greenland. Photos are Iceland. The base you mention is now housing units.
Sounds like you didn't read my posts linking to the articles. The Admiral's visit was in 2025, not 2006, and it lists several items re our presence there as well as spending. I've been there myself, in 2018, tuning some laser based equipment. Most of the base's gear is American as well, with some UK stuff.

Your wiki article supplied me with the facts you called my attention to. You helped me a lot.

Yet it is Iceland. Here is the photo of Iceland.

The photo looks nothing like Ice. Turns out it is.

Greenland is significantly icier than Iceland [1, 2]. In fact, the names are essentially swapped! [1, 2, 3]
Here is how the two compare:
  • Greenland: About 80% of the country is covered by a massive, permanent ice sheet that can be up to two miles thick. It is the second-largest body of ice on the planet. [1, 2]
  • Iceland: Only about 10% to 11% of the country is covered by permanent ice. Thanks to warming ocean currents from the Gulf Stream, it features intensely green landscapes, valleys, and moss-covered lava fields during the summer. [1, 2, 3]
The mismatched names actually date back over a thousand years to Viking settlers. Greenland was intentionally given an inviting name by Erik the Red to attract new settlers, while Iceland received its harsh name from an early Viking explorer after a particularly brutal winter.

Well, it's a pretty depressing place, no matter what time of the year. The people are pretty cool though, even with the high consumption of antidepressants, they are a close knit culture and have a high standard of living.
