As I have mentioned a few times before, I have founded two faith-based charities to help my community.
I perform due diligence par none, and only provide aid to those who are in dire straits through no fault of their own.
And rather than provide cash money to those we assist, I buy them groceries and clothing, pay their utility bills, their rent, their mortgages, and whatever else needs to be done for them.
A long time ago, a woman was complaining she had given money to a neighbor for food and that neighbor had gone out and bought more liquor instead.
An old man in the group said, "If you want them to have FOOD, give them FOOD!"
That's been my guiding light ever since.
But I will tell you this. Despite my organizations growing larger and larger over time, with more and more donors, we have never been able to meet all the needs of our community. And that's coupled with all the local churches, fellowships like the Kiwanis, and many others.
There just isn't enough private heavy lifting to meet all the needs.
At first, it brought me a lot of joy helping people. But as word spread about us, more and more honest, decent people approached and that's when the pain began.
I have had to look people in the eyes and refuse them due to a lack of resources to help everyone who needed it.
So government does have a place for helping people, despite what libertarians will tell you.
