The british brought curry to the UK over 200 years ago. Many of the old colonialists missed their spicy treats When retuning from India they often brought yjeir personal chefs with them.

So it was an upper class treat.

Thackeray refers to it in his writings. Most famously in Vanity Fair when Jos Sedley tricks Becky Sharp into eating a raw chili.

Its now the national dish of the UK.

I dont think so. Ive never heard it described as that before. It is one of very few blessings of empire.
Ive had some awful curries overseas. In Spain and Norway. I dont know why. The Spanish one had cabbage in it.
I wonder if american tastes have altered the basic curry flavour. Put bbq sauce or ketchup in it.
There is no reason curry should not dominate american tastes like it does over here.

It's not racist until you say something like "I got another damned annoying phone call from some curry-gobbler asking me for my Medicare card number."

They actually love doing stuff like that. I once got a phone call from someone with a heavy East Indian accent trying to get my credit card number.
