The US Army is funded several orders higher than any other army in the world. This is the most technically equipped army in the world, which has no competitors. It is probably the only army in the world that is composed entirely of professional military personnel, including ordinary soldiers.
The Taliban army consists of illiterate peasants who can do three things: run forward with a gun, run back with a gun, and shove shells into guns. The officer corps knows how to order these three things.
The war against Iraq, which has an army of sufficient level, ended in 1 day.

Therefore, the question arises: what were they doing there all this time?

It was the world's largest live fire guerilla warfare/counter insurgency training range.

There was no real "objective". At least not one that could be met without a level of brutality that even the soviets couldn't stomach, and they wiped out 20 million of their own people during the Stalin regime. It's the reason the Bush Admin made it a 2nd class mission and instead set up a flag pole in Iraq. That drew jihadist lunatics in from every-fuckin-where. We killed and captured assholes from all over the Arab world, euroweenie muslim immigrants, Chechnya, the Balkans, Malaysian, Pakistan and Mindanao.

What they were doing there was "winning the hearts and minds of the people", when they should have been exterminating scum without reservation.

"Rules of engagement", you know.

They weren't really their people. The Bolsheviks come mainly from the region of Belarus and the Moscow region, the northwestern lands.
The lands of the Don and Volga regions, Ukraine and Kazakhstan were the object of their genocide. These were mainly peoples who did not want to obey the Moscow authorities after the collapse of the empire, they were mainly lands under the control of the Cossacks, steppe horse-breeding peoples. For the Bolsheviks and the historical East Slavs (Balts) they were not related, at least culturally and politically. There were no genocides in the homeland of the Bolsheviks.

rupol2000 it's not a board game....there have been MANY wars where ''professional''' militaries have fought '''illiterate'''peasants -...these wars are MORE complex and '''HARDER''' to fight than conventional wars like PG1

Provided that there are many peasants and a hundred peasants are given for one professional

A. You're drastically underestimating the Taliban.

B. Look up the ROE.

3. How do you tell a Taliban fighter from a farmer?.
