DeVos to end federal common core

Are you suggesting that the creation of the Dept of Ed was the CAUSE of declining academic performance in the US relative to the rest of the industrialized world?

No, I'm pointing out that it's been a completely useless waste of billions of dollars over the last 36 years because the quality of education in this country is abysmal. Getting the federal government out of education, which for 200 years prior was a local and more successful function, will not harm anything. It will probably improve things.

You didn't read her post. She is 100% correct!

Michigan spends $1B on charter schools but fails to hold them accountable

Jennifer Dixon, DetroitFreePress 6:58 p.m. EDT August 24, 2016

Michigan taxpayers pour nearly $1 billion a year into charter schools ā€” but state laws regulating charters are among the nationā€™s weakest, and the state demands little accountability in how taxpayer dollars are spent and how well children are educated.

Snip

And a record number of charter schools run by for-profit companies that rake in taxpayer money and refuse to detail how they spend it, saying theyā€™re private and not subject to disclosure laws. Michigan leads the nation in schools run by for-profits.

Michigan spends $1B on charter schools but fails to hold them accountable

When you make public schools For Profit, you ruin them, and Betsy DeVos began all this in MI in the 90's.

Betsy Devos should retire in her vacation home.

As if public education isn't a mess? Really?

No, it is not. Society itself is a mess and we are dealing with it the best way we can.

It's high time and time to put schools back in local control.

It wonā€™t be a giant bureaucracy or a federal department. Nope. The answer isnā€™t bigger government. The answer is local control. Itā€™s listening to parents and itā€™s giving more choices. And if Iā€™m fortunate enough to be confirmed as your secretary of education, our kids, your kids will have someone fighting for them every single day.

Prior to introducing DeVos, Trump said the choice of education secretary was one of his ā€œmost important decisions,ā€ and that DeVos was one of the ā€œtop education reformers in our nation, someoneā€¦who has devoted decades to helping disadvantaged students.ā€

ā€œWeā€™re going to reform our broken education system to put students and families first,ā€ he said.

Gassy,

You're an imbecile......you will persist in this fantasy about the superiority of local school boards, as US educational achievement continues to fall behind the rest of the industrialized world....

Come on man, you honestly believe that bureaucrats in Washington are better at deciding what kid's education needs are than the teachers and parents in the particular system? Most absurd Socialist idea I've heard in a long time. Do away with the department of education and let the states and local governments educate their kids.

The problem with allowing states to choose what kids learn has led to children being disadvantaged or too high of an advantage when transferring schools that are in another state or district.

How did you come to that conclusion? Please provide a link which shows the statistics backing your assertion that this is a problem.

In reality, if you are at a school which leaves you behind when you move to another, then you're lucky you moved to a better school.

If a school produces substandard students then the parents need to insist their school board improves. Vouchers will equalize the opportunity fo low income kids to get better education instead of being stuck in poor performing schools.

No. With vouchers, you will just move the poor performing kids to the better schools and drag them down to being a poor performing school.

School success can be tied directly to the economic success of the parents. It sucks, but that is the truth..

FACT: Federal law already prohibits the government from forcing states to adopt Common Core.

FACT: It was the states ā€” more specifically the Council of Chief State School Officers and National Governors Association ā€” that developed the standards. During the Obama administration, the Education Department has played no specific role in the implementation of those standards, and the classroom curriculum used to meet the broad goals set out in Common Core is created by districts and states, as it always has been. Further, states have made tweaks to the Common Core standards since their initial adoption and, in some cases, have decided to drop the standards entirely.

If the states have adopted common core, there is little the DOE can do to turn the clock back. Some states have backed out common core by authorizing their DOE develope their own standards. However, it seems most of the these states will simply modify common core standards.

This is nonsense......school boards are susceptible to being hijacked by special interests....No American school child should be taught that evolution and Creationism (or even Intelligent Design) are "morally equivalent".

Knowledge isn't particular to any state or district. Unlike Little League, when competing against other nations, there isn't a special bracket for Alabama and Mississippi....

You're wrong and you're arrogant. What difference does it make if someone believes intelligent design versus evolution? My kids went to a Christian private high school. Most those teachers believed in intelligent design, and my kids got a great education. So what? It's a really, really bad example in trying to make a very weak point to begin with.

What your kids or mine believe in regard to evolution, or intelligent design is not relevant in a discussion of common core. States and even local districts are free to modify common core as they see fit. Common Core is a set of common goals, not a curriculum. Local teachers and districts will decide how those goals will be met. A number of states have made changes to Common Core.

The better states and local districts meet the goals of common core, the better prepared their students will be for college because colleges will build their entry level curriculum with the assumption that common core goals have been met.

If you look at a comparison of test scores between nations, you'll find the US has the greatest range between the best scoring students and worst scoring among all developed nations.

One need only look at the education we give non-college bound students. Basically, they are treated as looser and ignored and their test scores show it. Our financing of schools also denies resources to schools in poorer areas which is where most of the non-college bound students attend. If we want test scores to improve, we have to stop ignoring non-college bound students. There education matters too.

This is an outdated notion. Many vocational schools, and programs within schools, are now highly competitive.

Only about 10% of the students are in Vocational Ed in high school. 65% go on to college. The remaining 25% are ones I am talking about. Unlike other countries who force kids like this into either vocational programs or college prep programs, we allow these students to drift through high school, learning little and dragging down test scores.

I don't blame the schools for this. I think the fault lies with the parents who insist their kids go to college, even though they don't have grades or the interest.
