The Danish government has announced a huge boost in defence spending for Greenland, hours after US President-elect Donald Trump repeated his desire to purchase the Arctic territory.

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the package was a "double digit billion amount" in krone, or at least $1.5bn (£1.2bn).

He described the timing of the announcement as an "irony of fate". On Monday Trump said ownership and control of the huge island was an "absolute necessity" for the US.

Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, is home to a large US space facility and is strategically important for the US, lying on the shortest route from North America to Europe. It has major mineral reserves.

Pituffik Space Base is a United States Space Force base located on the northwest coast of Greenland. It is the northernmost installation of the U.S. Armed Forces, 1,210 km (750 mi) north of the Arctic Circle and 1,524 km (947 mi) from the North Pole. Pituffik's Arctic environment includes icebergs in North Star Bay, two islands (Saunders Island and Wolstenholme Island), a polar ice sheet, and Wolstenholme Fjord. The base is home to a substantial portion of the global network of missile warning sensors of Space Delta 4, and space surveillance and space control sensors of Space Delta 2, providing space awareness and advanced missile detection capabilities to North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the United States Space Force, and joint partners.

last line in your article "He is not the first US president to suggest buying Greenland. The idea was first mooted during the 1860s under the presidency of Andrew Johnson."

I haven't heard for any calls for unity from the left. All I've heard is calls for them to get their way even though they're out of power for awhile--that IS their definition of 'unity' I guess--and that is interspersed with idiot thinking like Trump intends to take over Greenland.

There's a thread on it here somewhere, and I've heard it several times after Trump's win.

Well if you find any of those posts let me know. I sure as heck haven't seen any of them.

I looked into several of those and all I see is the same disunity that has been the case for a very long time now.

A thread title can be one of the most dishonest things about a thread.

But this thread is about the numbnuts who think Trump wants to take over Greenland.

I wonder how much of that $1,5B will go to help support Pituffik SB. LMAO

I'm curious. If he's bullshitting, how does one separate Chump's various pronouncements into complete bullshit and utter bullshit?

This benefits the U.S. as I'm sure we have some agreement to defend Greenland against attack, so now we don't have to bear the whole burden for Denmark.

Gosh, Trump is on a roll!

It's not as if Denmark has no experience in US double dealing when entering into agreements with the US.

Article 6 obliged the US "to show due respect for all regulations and customs affecting the population and the administration of Greenland". The military airbase in Narsarsuaq was developed into a joint base of Danish and American troops.[8][9]
At the end of 1953, the secret of a weather station 140 km (87 mi) from the army base in Kangerlussuaq came to light. The station had been built by US forces without the knowledge of the Danish government.[10]
Camp Century was described at the time as a demonstration of affordable ice-cap military outposts. The secret Project Iceworm was to be a system of tunnels 4,000 kilometres (2,500 mi) in length, used to deploy up to 600 nuclear missiles, that would be able to reach the Soviet Union in case of nuclear war. The missile locations would be under the cover of Greenland's ice sheet and were supposed to be periodically changed. While Project Iceworm was secret, plans for Camp Century were discussed with and approved by Denmark. The facility, including its nuclear power plant, was profiled in The Saturday Evening Post magazine in 1960.

Whilst Denmark had to bear the US' burden for Afghanistan after the US ran squealing to NATO.

Yes, Denmark was as stupid as we were in that war.

No more forever wars, thank God.
