It's a way to maintain the pretentious facade of moral and intellectual superiority: Declare that my position makes no sense as if this is established fact and not just his opinion. Then, when asked to explain it, refuse to do so. Thus, (in his mind) I look like a stumbling bumpkin when the truth is, he misunderstood my position or conflated it the whole time.
