If you lose, just simply have a new election immediately without having to wait until the next election. That's right folks. California democrats made a convoluded system designed to rig elections in their favor by having one open primary for all parties and the two top vote getters go on to the general election in November. Since it is a highly voting blue state this voting method was designed to get two democrats to the general election in November and exclude any other party from that vote.
But, oops, this year the top two vote getters are both Republicans because there are several democrats deluting the democrat votes to the point they may be out of the picture and allowing the top two vote getters, both Republicans, competing in the November general election, assuring that a Republican would be the next governor and not a democrat.
Not to worry though, democrats have a plan in case that happens and a Republican becomes governor of their blue state. They could have an immediate recall and force another election, which would probably result in a Democrat winning the recall election. Why wait for the next election when you can create your own immediate next election now?

Lopez: Yes, a Republican could be California's next governor. And a recall would begin immediately
In one of the weirdest elections in California history, here's how it might all play out.
