On this date in 1983, the Iron Sheik led by Ayatollah Fred Blassie were able to seize the WWF heavyweight champion from Bob Backlund in New York City.

The world was shocked. The sheik's plan was to take the belt back to Iran forever.

But the plan was foiled a month later with Hulk Hogan's incredible comeback upset victory over the Iron Sheik.

I would have liked to have seen the ''Iron Shiek'' vs. Bob Backland in a real grappling match like the ones shown on Fight Pass. It would have been an exciting match. Both were well trained and successful grapplers.
