The reigning champion, the Iron Sheik was originally scheduled to give a rematch to Bob Backlund in Teheran, Iran (the Sheik's home town)

But there was first a problem with the Teheran Arena's schedule, so they moves the match to Madison Square Garden in New York.

Then Backlund had to pull out, and the Hulkster was installed as a last minute substitution.

The rest was history.

Had the Iron Sheik pinned Hogan, he had promised to take the WWF title to Iran forever.

Fortunately, that didn't happen

Well, clearly, if you're holding a high profile event, you don't call, the Sydney Opera House or London's West End...you go to Tehran. Every booking agent worth her salt has the Auyatollah of Wrestling...lets not kid our selves.

I was just happy that the second choice--Madison Square Garden was available. Otherwise we may have never heard of Hulkamania...

Thanks for forty year old news no one gives a crap about.

Be sure to keep us up to date on The Cosby Show and Who's The Boss.

It makes more sense when you remember that the Sheik's manager, Classy Freddie Blassie was an ayatollah.

All the great ayatollahs are usually called "classy".

Insane.

Its not unheard of, that's for sure.
