Well he should be. It would have been so much more honorable to see them get behind him for the sacrifice of his golden years that he made. They nagged him for months to run in 2020 and the answer was no repeatedly. Then finally they prevailed upon him to give up what should have been four very good, peaceful years. And then there was the airing of all the dirty family laundry that will never go away.
They treated him like shit.... It looked like a goddamned episode of The Sopranos for god sakes.

He has a legacy to protect - the legacy of being a better president than Jimmy Carter. If he causes too much trouble, his legacy may be being the worst president the country has ever had.

One legacy that he does have which may last until the sun goes supernova is in being the only president in history who had such a bad debate performance that his own party ran him out of town after he had already won the primaries. That's going to be a tough one to overcome.

2024 is not 2020. I actually disagree with some of my conservative friends who claim Biden would have done better than Harris. He was going down faster than the Titanic and that wasn't going to change. It was only going to get worse. So, even though Trump may have won the trifecta, it would have been much worse with Biden being the nominee.

Sometimes there's something more valuable than winning. Loyalty. The specter of power hungriness was so evident with the elimination of Joe but I doubt seriously whether or not any of them thought about how bad it looked.
Also I'm not convinced that this wasn't a plan B right along from the beginning. There was a lot of tension over the past 4 years between the two camps and most likely it was because they knew there was an assassin in the closet.
