Democrats pull ad with flag-draped coffins

By SEANNA ADCOX, Associated Press WriterFri Jul 14, 8:45 PM ET

Democrats pulled an Internet ad that showed flag-draped coffins Friday after Republicans and at least two Democrats demanded it be taken down on grounds the image was insensitive and not fit for a political commercial.

The ad by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee called for a "new direction" and displayed a staccato of images, including war scenes, pollution and breached levees as well as a photograph of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay doctored to look like a police mug shot.

The campaign committee replaced the ad with a radio commercial that targets Rep. John Hostetler, R-Ind., for opposing an increase in the minimum wage. Democrats have made a minimum wage increase a central theme of this year's election.

Democrats had featured the video ad for nearly two weeks on the DCCC Web site where it had gone largely unnoticed until Republicans began objecting to it this week. On Thursday, more than a dozen Republicans, many with military backgrounds, called on DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., to apologize. Democratic Reps. John Spratt of South Carolina and Chet Edwards of Texas asked Emanuel to pull or alter the ad.

"We're moving to another major effort that we're highlighting on our Web site," DCCC spokesman Bill Burton said.

In South Carolina, Spratt's Republican challenger, state Rep. Ralph Norman, commended the removal. It was "the right thing to do for the state, country and especially the brave men and women who serve in our military," said Norman's spokesman, Nathan Hollifield.

Libs come out, thump their chest, tell us how they will stand up to the Republicans, Pres Bush, and the terrorists.

Yet the cave and fold like a cheap suit

The dems are a real tower of jello

Thank God people do not trust them with national security and national defense
Seriously, I'm not sure how you get from here to there. But you're correct, the dems are not to be trusted.

So true. Infact, neither party is to be trusted. Neither party looks out for the best interest of American citizens, they just sling mud and make a fool of themselves in an attempt to get votes.

Dems Suck
Reps Suck

Libs say how they will stand up to the Republicans, they will not allow them to roll over them, and yet they cave on this ad

Libs say we need to get out if Iraq - yet everytime there is a vote on that issue the Dems vote against it

The point is, Dems stand for nothing. They offer nothing to America. They actually do not want to solve any problems. They would rather have the issues

Bunch of spinelss cowards for pulling it they are too! Having lost count of the number of times the GOP use images of 9/11 in thier '04 campaign and as offten as Chimpy, and other members of his administration, uses our men and women in uniform for props at their little little photo ops, I can only say, "Methinks they dost protest too much...".

After all, it was Chimpy's administration who banned the press corps from photographing the flag draped coffins of our fallen soldiers as they arrived at Andrews Air Force Base. Can't have such shocking images reminding people of the human cost we are paying for Chimpy's dirty little war, now can we? God knows, the American people have to be shielded from such inconvenient truths, else they might get the idea that government is supposed to serve at the pleasure of the people, not vice-versa.

That was cool how you slipped "inconvenient truths" in there --are you really Al Gore ?

Could be. Considering nobody is going to see his flop film, Al does need as many free plugs as he can get

I have yet to hear, or read, a satisfactory explanation as to why the GOP use of firefighters using images of a flag drapped coffin being removed from the WTC site and DCCC use of images of the flag draped coffins of soldiers killed in Iraq are any different. Or would you just rather avoid the topic entirely?
