What it shows is that a combination of positive traits - intelligence, obviously, but also discipline, motivation, a strong value of higher education, etc. - can overcome just about anything.

Look at the Jews who landed at Ellis Island around the turn of the last century. They were impoverished, uneducated, and didn’t even speak the language, and settled into cold-water, walk-up tenements. One generation later, their kids were all college graduates, business owners, or otherwise gainfully employed, with single family homes in the suburbs and a nice swingset in the backyard for the kiddos.
