I didn't make the rules, politicians did.
Most states have an asset limit for qualifying for benefits., includes cars, house, bank accounts etc. However, there is also an income limit ceiling that assets aren't counted. It's around $1500 a month, varies by state. If you're under $1500 a month you qualify for SNAP, Li-heap and Medicare if your under 65.
If you have a wad of money in deferred accounts like 401's, that money doesn't count. If you have CD's or other investments that generate monthly interest, they do. So if you make less than $1500, varies by state, you qualify and houses, cars and bank accounts don't count as assets unless you make more than the ceiling.
You can have multiple bank accounts totaling $150,000, non interest bearing accounts totaling over a Million, and you qualify.
You get $ about $300 a month in SNAP, Medicare fully covered and your highest heating bill paid monthly plus you have all the play money in your bank accounts to use also.
