On April 22, 2021, Wright was driving with his girlfriend in his white 2011 Buick LaCrosse on their way to a car wash. A Brooklyn Center police officer in a patrol car observed the vehicle signaling a right turn while it was inside a left turning lane. The officer also noticed that the vehicle had expired registration tag/sticker on license plate and had an air freshener hanging from the car's rearview mirror, a violation of Minnesota state law.
I've signalled to make right turn like that, then I move to the right lane and turn. After all, you're supposed to hit your signals to change lanes. Now that started everything and it was not necessary.
