Granted, I make enough at one time to can half of it for later but damn.

I've been going to Audi to get their USDA choice pot roast kit (beef, potatoes, onion, carrots) in a package....It makes for a great soup starter.....$22.00

A can each of tomato paste, corn, green beans, peas, diced tomatoes.....Around $6.00.

A quart box of beef broth....$2.00

A small head of cabbage....$1.50

That's $31.50 for a cauldron of soup.....Maybe 3.5 to 4 gallons.

Not too bad per serving I guess but more than you would think for the initial outlay.

I guess that's the price we pay for quality. I noticed the same thing about pies. We do fund-raising pie auctions for the local grange and I made pies for a few years. It wasn't unusual to end up in the $30+ column for a pie. I bought my pies myself a couple of times when someone tried to get them for $20. These ain't no $5 Marie Callenders pies. To be fair, I have also seen huckleberry baked goods go for $150, $300 and more. But those homemade goods are soooooo good.

Huh, I've found Marie Callender's Lemon pies to be pretty darn good for store bought.

What I really miss is a good homemade angel food cake.

Is that huckleberry as a brand name or as an ingredient? I lived in Western Montana for a while, where EVERYTHING with huckleberries in it was BIG BUCK. In some areas, there are Cambodian communities that claim huckleberry picking rights in parts of the wilderness, and they mean business.

Not a big deal for me because huckleberries and blueberries are on my list of no-no foods.

Huckleberry BRANDS? Naw, I'm talking about the ones you get from patches high in the mountains and spend a day picking. Those baked goods in this area always command high prices. Condolences on your not being able to enjoy them. I love all kinds of berries. I just discovered a new one in Canada this summer, the haskap berry. It is of the honeysuckle family and they are really good. I think I might plant one or two. As for picking rights, LOL, if it isn't private property, the war would be on. That's why I pack when picking. JK, bears.

The price per pound for the beef is probably pretty high. All the other ingredients are cheap.

You forgot the modified food starch, hydrolyzed soy protein and maltodextrin.

It's the same way with Cambodians and mushroom hunting. They have their grounds and you'd damn well better be packing.

My hubby's doctor -- Japanese -- used to go picking and brought home the BEST matsutake! And if you were lucky enough to have an appointment during mushroom season, you might be sent home with fungi instead of pills. My mother-in-law made the BEST soup with matsutake.

Marie Callender's had a restaurant in Mission Valley in San Diego, and they made the best strawberry pie.

It had a glaze with whole strawberries topped with whipped cream.

I used to go there once a month.

We liked their lemon pie, for card playing nights with hubby and MIL.

I worked with a guy who baked pies at a Marie Callendars in Modesto during the Thanksgiving/Christmas seasons as a second job. Those aren't $5 frozen pies but yeah, they're pretty good and they use quality ingredients. LOL, in CA, I've never had a bad strawberry pie.
