Good call by Cruz. McCain is getting all "mavericky" trying to forge his legacy and he'll cave to anything to be able to seem relevant in his final years.

Apparently McCain has been meeting with the President on a consistent basis over the past few months and actually opined in an interview that he wished he could spend more time with the President to advise him.
