Many states require write-in candidates to register as a write-in and Bernie has not registered in ANY state.

Writing in people who are not registered is a wasted protest vote because it will not be counted.

Which is a shame but them's the rules.

I was all set to write him in until I found out that it would not count.

People will write him in anyway but they probably won't even release a count of how many people do that.

That's a lot of ifs. Bernie almost certainly won't do that. As he recognizes profound differences between Hillary and Trump, even if you don't.

But speaking hypothetically, sure. Plenty of his supporters would vote write him in. It would hurt Hillary but not hugely. As most Bernie supporters recognize what Bernie does: that Hillary is a much preferred option to any Republican at the moment.

And in the ludicriously unlikely event that he got the most votes.....it would depend on the state laws. If the state allows and counts 'write ins' for candidates that aren't certified by state law, then he probably wouldn't get their electors. The majority of Sanders supporters won't enthusiastically support Hilary in the general election, many are independents, and many, like myself, regard Hilary Clinton as absolutely unacceptable under any circumstances.
