Nah, worked great. The bulbous end was better for pushing too. That and at 36" it was the same length as a wooden riot baton (I just measured the one I have). Can't say about the fancy plastic ones.True, but that isn't law enforcement. It is crowd control. Most mattock handles are too long, and do not come with the leather strap as issued riot batons do (or at least did, back in the day), which helps maintain control of the baton, for effectiveness, and the short length is better for operations in actual riot formations, that are basically only slightly more than shoulder to shoulder and in depth with multiple lines behind the front line. A mattock handle's length would interfere with troops to your right, left or rear.
When/if swinging time came it was a lot more effective than a baton too, more weight up front without being too heavy like say a ball bat.
