The second-largest county in the United States has established a permanent guaranteed basic income program after the success of a previous pilot version.
The Cook County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved $7.5 million for a permanent guaranteed basic income program last week. Chicago, the largest city in the Midwest and third-largest in the country, is the county seat for Cook County.
Cook County made headlines as it established the guaranteed basic income program after many local governments across the country launched pilot versions.
I love the “federal govt is doing nothing to help people, while Cook County is stepping up”.
They (mis)used Federal Covid $$$ to pay for their pilot program.

In Cook County, taxpayers are experiencing significant increases in their property tax bills. The median tax bill has risen by approximately 16.7%, with some neighborhoods on the South and West Sides seeing increases of 80% to 130%. This increase is attributed to a decline in the assessed value of commercial properties, particularly in the Loop area, which has led to a shift in the tax burden from commercial to residential properties. Homeowners in predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods are particularly affected, with some bills increasing by nearly $2,000 in West Garfield Park and $1,900 in North Lawndale.
