What you fail to understand is that our entire demographic was different then. Democrats were FAR different then. They were, gasp, extremely patriotic and had a will to achieve the American dream by hard word. That ideal has been eroded by the policies you and your party espouse. Naturally, over time, people realized they didn’t have to work as much because the freebeis kept flowing. They were told that those that did and were successful were bad people. They were taught that the US is horrible and that our system needs to be overhauled. What we are left with is anti-American, lazy, hate-filled, envious Democrats.
I think you are confused. The Democrats in those days fought for unions and workers' rights. They established the 40-hour work week, ended child labor, and established retirement programs.
What happened was that once the great unwashed white people climbed up that ladder to the Middle Class, they saw black folks and immigrants climbing up that same ladder and wanted to pull the ladder up.
You see, your part of the country used to be reliably Democratic, because they benefited from the Democrat programs of expanding the social contract, as well as farm subsidies and investments. Then LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and people in the South absolutely lost their ******* shit and started voting Republican.
Because LBJ said it best.. .still true today.
We have a cycle in this country. ..
Republicans **** things up.
Democrats come in and fix stuff.
Republicans whine that they aren't fixing stuff fast enough.
Democrats fix things, and the economy gets back to normal.
Republicans start playing on the racial, religious, and sexual fears of white people. ("Oh, My God, That Transgender Muslim Immigrant is going to EAT YOUR CAT!!!")
Return to Step 1.
It used to take over a decade for this cycle to play out, but now we seem to be doing it every four years. Trump hasn't been back a year, and already he's sent the economy right back into the crapper.
Race has nothing to do with it. But I know you can’t help yourself.
It has everything to do with it. The Europeans only started complaining about immigration when black folks from Africa started showing up.
Welfare is not lost just because someone works 40 hours/wk. It is lost if they make ~130% above the poverty level. Many don’t work because they don’t feel like it is worth the effort to work for the little more they receive.
Do you realize how very little 130% of the poverty level is?
For a family of 3, it's $35,000. For a single person, it's $20,000.
So the minute you take a few extra houses to creep over that 20K or 30K limit, you lose your Section 8, your health coverage, your food assistance.
