Wouldn't know. There really haven't been any attacks on a carrier since WW2, so we have no idea how vulnerable they are. We do know the former USS America (A Kitty Hawk class carrier) was the subject of live fire experiments to see how much damage she could take before she was scuttled in a controlled sinking. Even without damage control crews on board, she held up pretty well to the tests.

Now, our inability to recruit young men and women to serve on these ships is another matter.

I'm not so sure. The NY Courts have shown no interest in reversing this conviction and the Federal courts really don't have jurisdiction.
