Socialism is not a political system.
A political system is how you make political decisions, like a democracy, a representative democracy, a theocracy, a dictatorship, an oligarchy, etc.
Socialism is just how much influence government is allow to have over economics.
If government has no influence over economics, it is Anarchism or Libertarianism.
If you have some public enterprise but not much, that is socialism.
If all enterprise is public, then you have communism.

All good societies have always been socialist, since things like schools, health care, transportation, utilities, etc., should almost always be public.
