Colorado taxes sale of firearms

MD, Colorado, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Washington, and New Mexico are among the states where lawmakers are considering similar bills, a Trace review found. Most are modeled after California’s 11 percent tax on firearm manufacturers and retailers.

California was the first state to enact such an excise tax, but at least three municipalities have also done so: Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, and Cook County, Illinois. Pennsylvania also adds a $3 surcharge on firearm sales to support the state’s background check system.

The federal government has, since 1919, imposed a national excise tax of 10 to 11 percent on the import and production of firearms to support wildlife conservation; the state taxes would be in addition to the federal tax.

Virginia tacks on $2.00 for the background check.

So to rule this tax unconstitutional a court would have to rule the federal tax unconstitutional also.

I suspect so....Killing two birds with one stone is not a bad thing. ;)

Did you know that the federal tax applies to things like tackle boxes and other sporting goods?

Yet Plano (who makes tackle boxes) makes the same tackle box but calls it a "cosmetic box"?

They are usually of a pastel color but the exact same box without the 11% fed excise tax the tackle box is subjected to.

People are good at getting around things.

The power to tax is the power to destroy.

Do you pay sales tax on guns and ammo, like other products?

Is it the same % in all states?
We do in Florida and the % depends on city, county and state sales taxes. Online purchases we also pay sales tax for guns and ammo.

Most firearm dealers, gun manufacturers and ammunition sellers in Colorado will have to pay a 6.5% excise tax on qualifying sales starting April 1.

That translates to $33 in new taxes on a $500 handgun, or $65 in taxes on a $1,000 rifle; $20 worth of ammunition will cost an extra $1.30. Much of those costs will likely be passed on to consumers.

The tax will also apply to many gun parts and accessories, as well as equipment used to manufacture firearms.

Why does CO hate those of modest means just trying to protect themselves?
Consider the 6.5% a tariff, then link this thread to the threads on tariffs!!

Sales tax varies by state.

  • Five states—Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon—do not impose a state sales tax...1
Tax Foundation. "State and Local Sales Tax Rates, Midyear 2024."
  • California has the highest state sales tax rate in the U.S. at 7.25%.
  • Some states without a sales tax may still impose local or excise taxes on specific goods, such as alcohol or tobacco.
  • States without sales taxes may have higher property or income taxes to generate revenue.

So is a higher sales tax on guns in one state classed as infringement and not in another?

The 6.5% on guns in Delaware is less than the general sales tax in California, so there's less infringement??

Ask poster #2....I'm done with you.
I'm just trying to get to grips with the retarded American gun nut logic.

Delaware do not impose a state tax, but gonna put 6.5% on guns and ammo. Some states have a higher state tax than the 6.5%. so is that greater than infringed?

The 2nd Amendment has simply made gun nuts retarded bell ends.

There's a spectrum in the US. The Left suffer from trans and snowflakes, the Right suffer from gun nuts.

The 2nd Amendment and common sense are polar opposites. State common sense with guns, clichés start flying. No doubt incoming clichés on the horizon.
