Late Saturday night, a 22-year-old man identified as Anderson Lee Aldrich allegedly killed five people and injured dozens more at the LGBTQ nightclub Club Q in Colorado Springs. Aldrich, who’s currently in police custody, has also been identified by Heavy as the grandson of California state Assemblymember Randy Vopel, a pro-Trump Republican who likened the Jan. 6 insurrection that killed five to the Revolutionary War.

The extent of Aldrich’s relationship to his grandfather isn’t immediately clear, but tellingly, the Republican Party has spent the last several months in particular escalating their attacks on queer and trans people. In addition to Aldrich’s ties to a far-right elected official who glorified violence on the Capitol, he has a documented history of violence—but obtained an AR-15 nonetheless.

In 2021, Aldrich’s mother called the police on her son, reporting that he was threatening her with a homemade bomb and other weapons. Police responded to the threat by evacuating part of the neighborhood and engaging in a standoff with Aldrich, before he surrendered and was charged with five felony counts including kidnapping and felony menacing. More than two-thirds of mass shootings are domestic violence incidents or perpetrated by shooters with a history of domestic violence, a 2021 study found.
According to the Washington Post, it’s not clear why local prosecutors declined to pursue charges in the case, and court records for the case were placed under seal, the Colorado Springs Gazette reports. Further, Aldrich seems to have skirted Colorado’s “red flag” gun law that allows authorities to confiscate guns from individuals with histories of mental illness or violence. Colorado Springs is notably in El Paso County, one of 2,000 counties nationwide that identify as “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.” The Associated Press notes that the county “appears especially hostile” to Colorado’s red flag law and went so far as to pass a 2019 resolution condemning the law.

While I am a proud MAGA Republican, and a card-carrying member of the Great Right Wing Conspiracy, I do not recall getting any memo advising me to kill sexual irregulars. Nor do recall anyone recommending violence against such unfortunates, although there is a rather pronounced hatred of the political and moral philosophy (Leftism) that encourages such aberrations and lifestyles.

Could some intrepid reader provide a link to these communications? My AR-15 is getting dusty.

No one forces you to lie to run cover for conservative terrorism. You do that of your own free will.

Just as no one forces you to support Russian Nazis and their use of torture and genocide, but you still do.

You've embraced fascism and genocide just to "own the libs". You're a poster child for the banality of evil. When people say "It can't happen here" in regards to fascism, we just need point to you as proof that it can happen.

As far as the OP goes ... it's good to be a white boy with well-connected Republican parents. You can pretty much get away with anything.

And if any of you conservatives here ever called leftists "groomers", then man up and take responsibility for the violence that you've helped cause with your BigLie. I get that the whole point of conservatism is never having to take responsibilty for your actions, ever, but maybe you could all act like grownups instead.

the state enacts a Red Flag law, then doesn't enforce it?

Of course not

Why would they enforce a law keeping criminals from getting/using firearms?

Yet another manifestation of rightwing idiocy.
There’s no such thing as Second Amendment ‘sanctuaries,’ it’s rightwing idiocy.

Federal firearm regulations will be enforced in all jurisdictions in the United States; Federal law is the supreme law of the land, and there’s nothing local officials can do to stop it.

As to the OP – yes it comes as no surprise that the shooter is related to a rightwing ‘MAGA’ loon; such is the violent, lawless right.

Why would anyone need a sanctuary for a Right provided by the Constitution?

So Nancy can be charged as an accessory in these 5 murders for orchestrating the J6 Reichstag Fire?

Better the left pounces on why in 2021 he was charged with six violent felonies, cut loose, charges dropped, and records sealed.

Meh, I guess it's just easier to go after the low hanging fruit.....I'm surprised it took them this long as the info has been out a couple of days.

While I am a proud MAGA Republican
lol

That’s nothing to be ‘proud’ of.

And the right’s message of demonization and vilification of gay and transgender Americans is loud and clear:

‘Conservatives have repeatedly smeared LGBTQ people and their allies as pedophiles and child predators — baseless claims that have roots in age-old anti-gay tropes and conspiracy theories like QAnon.

From those fringe beginnings, the term has made its way into the mainstream, appearing on Fox News and in talking points of high-ranking conservative lawmakers like Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has called Democrats "the party of pedophiles." Florida's "Don't Say Gay" law, which bans teachers from speaking in class about sexual orientation and gender identity, was nicknamed the "Anti-Grooming Bill" by one of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis's top staffers.’

No. The "insurrection" didn't kill 5, it killed 1. Ashley babbit who was shot unarmed on her hands and knees crawling by capitol police.

The others were a suicide, heart attacks and a stroke.

Your article also says it doesn't know the relationship with his grandfather. They don't even know if they were close or not. So there is no connection there.

And so what if his grandfather was a republican? What does that have to do with anything?

Hitler's grandfather was a jew and we saw how that whole thing turned out.
