There were several small northern states back then that wouldnot support a popular vote election cuz the more populous states would dominate elections and render them relatively irrelevant. And the slave states wanted more representation in the federal gov't too, basically for the same reason. So the EC was not rooted in racism, but in politics.

By any definition, that is the EC being "rooted in slavery". Slavery is not the primary reason for the EC, but there is no denying its major impact on the EC.

Southern delegates to the Constitutional Convention wanted to protect slavery and giving the South more political power, via more EC votes and more House representation in Congress.
