There were a few hundred Jews living on the WB at that time, and today there are half-a-million. Apparently, Jews want all the land between the River and the sea, and they aren't likely to change 66 years of "creeping annexation" until world opinion gives them no other option.

My solution: USA buys back most of the settlement, give very fair mortgages to Palestinians, set up Holy Them Park in Jerusalem, staffed by Norwegians.

An Independent Gaza would represent a serious set back to their plans; until the rest of the world begins calling for sanctions on the Jewish state, they will continue the process of ethnic cleansing in Palestine.
