Regarding the OP:

I often use the term leftist because they are not liberal but liberal is the word they have hijacked to promote themselves.

There was a time when it meant what it means but that was long ago. The left has steady marched towards the left, so much so that there's hardly a discernible difference with socialism. Almost had a socialist presidential nominee but the party is too corrupt to let the people make decisions.

Classic liberalism is what today we call libertarian. I agree with much of it but they tend to be more isolationist than I think practical and can't go along with their drug position since they are so devastating to society.
