In the mid 1990s, the Chair of CFOS, a Canadian Anglican priest, was appointed Vicar of Gaza to minister to the Anglican and Protestant community there because Palestinian clergy had not been permitted to enter Gaza regularly for 15 years. The church there (St. Philips Church, Gaza), was consecrated in 1996 on the grounds of the Anglican hospital. Sadly, in 2003, it was demolished by a laser-guided missile launched from an Israeli helicopter; a portion of the hospital was also damaged.
In 2009, Israel bombed and obliterated the church-operated mother-and-child clinic nearby. The ancient Christian witness and service in Gaza has continued and is made manifest through this church-related outreach.
