Chinese economy continues to contract
Saturday 31st October, 2015 - Economic data released in Beijing on Sunday has raised concerns about the sustainability of the Chinese economy at current levels.

Manufacturing activity in October declined for the third consecutive month while the services sector expanded at its lowest level in 7 years. The official non-manufacturing PMI dropped to 53.1 in October, down from 53.4 the previous month. It was the lowest reading since the global financial crisis in 2008. New factory export orders fell for a 13th straight month.

The latest figures come on top of data published last week which showed the growth of the economy in China fell from 7% to 6.9% for the September quarter, the lowest reading again since the 2008 GFC. The latest figures come in the wake of a wave of stimulus measures which appear to be having little effect. The government has lowered official interest rates 6 times in the past twelve months and lowered the amount of cash that banks must hold as reserves 4 times this year.

Restrictions on property investment have been lifted and government spending on infrastructure works has increased. Analysts are hoping the stimulus measures so far will steady the economy, if not allow a minor improvement in the court quarter, leading into 2016.
